Rural MA/NY CT Communities Come Together to Support the Yang and Tamang Families with a Go Fund Me after a Fire with a Double Fatality
So much comes up for anyone hearing a fire siren knowing 'this one is serious'...I heard these alarms and realized it was down the road from where I was...and thankfully some were saved (with a quick brave soul, Frank Duncan, helping Amy out after breaking a window and putting lumber in place for her to use to get down from the second floor...) I have a friend who told me of his close call with a fire that started from cigarette embers on his porch swirling about in a way they lit the house ablaze late in the night..but he and his housemates narrowly escaped (one from an upstairs window that blew out from the heat...and a ladder was put in place quickly to help one escape...)
Let's all keep those ladders and 'exits from each flloor' in place..along with smoke alarms and CO, carbon monoxide detectors up and running... A buddy system to help each other check on such things (and have fire extinguishers handy) can help folks.
Fire drills and remembering to 'stop, drop and roll' if fire finds one..and stay low and don't open doors if they feel hot...Just a few tips and feel free to add some of your own..fire blankets, using the right kind of extinguisher to put out an electrical fire (not water..) and basically a ton of tips to review for the times when 'Danger and Emergencies Strike..."
Thanks upon thanks to all volunteers and people looking out for one another on a regular basis as well as when heroic measures and extra effort is called for... So many respond. Generous donations are another wonderful show of support and can help people pull through...
For some added comfort but also remembrance of a past tragedy, see the memorial service for our late teen son Kaelan Paton on youtube which was held in July 2009 ,a month after he drowned saving his friends who thankfully made it out from devastating waters in the tri-corner MA/NY CT area.
More supervision of youth and teens as well as young adults by parents and community leaders and guidelines can prevent that kind of loss and danger (even for rescues that were needed...)
Kaelan's service was full of song and reflection on the gift of life and caring for one another...and that's a theme that is lived by many still even over a decade later with his friends now all reaching 30 soon...with plenty of adventures to come and to support one another in.
The ages of the victims of this fire, remind us that even in the 20s and 'safe at home' may need extra consideration...and yet overall the closeness that families and friends can have in their communities shines through and will be treasured for the gifts each were to their families and wider circles.

For Immediate Release: Fatal Fire in Millerton
On November 6, 2021 at 07:58am the Millerton Fire Company was dispatched to 5902 South Elm Avenue for a report of a possible house fire with people trapped.
Chief Jason Watson arrived within 4 minutes and found the house fully engulfed in flames with a report of 2 people still trapped inside the structure. Chief Watson immediately transmitted a 2nd Alarm bringing additional equipment and personnel from Amenia, Wassaic, Copake, Ancram, Hillsdale, Lakeville, Sharon, Falls Village Fire Companies, and Town of North East Medic 1. Pine Plains Hose Company was brought in to stand by in Millerton’s Fire Station.
The first engine arrived on scene and immediately began suppressing the fire, utilizing compressed air foam. One Female was transported to the hospital by North East Medic 1 for smoke inhalation, a Firefighter was also transported for an injury. Tragically two people lost their lives inside the home. The fire was placed under control at 11:44am.
The cause and origin of the fire is being investigated by the Dutchess County Fire Investigation team, New York State Police, and the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office.
All units were back in service at 7:30pm. Millerton is not releasing the names of the fire victims at this time.
The Millerton Fire Company and the North East fire District would like to thank Millerton Fire’s Support Group, County Executive Marc Molinaro, Village Mayor Jenn Najdek, Deputy Mayor Alicia Sarori, Village Clerk Kelly Kilmer, North East Town Supervisor Chris Kennan, Talk of the Towne Deli, Four Brothers Pizza, Herrington’s Lumber, Northwest Lawn and Landscape, Four Seasons Pools, along with the community who reached out to give a hand. A big thank you also to the Dutchess 911 Dispatcher’s and coordinators CC-2, CC-3, CC-14, CC-51, and CC-59. And last but not least the 50 plus Volunteer Firefighters who answered the alarm in helping to suppress this tragic fire.
