Supporting Small Businesses Impacted by the Coronavirus
Thursday 3/26/20 @ 5:00PM
Governor Ned Lamont, Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz, and U.S. Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro will host a virtual town hall meeting on federal and state efforts to assist employers and employees impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Connecticut Department of Labor Commissioner Kurt Westby and Department of Economic and Community Development Deputy Commissioner Glendowlyn Thames will speak with local businesses. The discussion will be moderated by founder and CEO of the Women's Business Development Council Fran Pastore.
Meanwhile I am hearing a call from HRC, Human Rights Campaign to help people from all walks of life, particularly LGBTQ people with help during this COVID19 time of concerns. They are important advocates more people can learn about and consider during voting times in November 2020. Look for more information on their website. A medical speaker, Dr. Streed, on the HRC call shares that 'another corona virus' researchers knew were coming down the pike and what it would look like. Some key points--China reported a novel corona virus, COVID19, in the Wuhan province.
Transmission could be oral/fecal route (mouth or do to contact with feces or in a bathroom,) airborne through sneezing or coughing and even breathing. Any scratchy throat could be a symptom and people without symptoms could spread the virus. The isolation periods of 2-14 days when sympotms may appear in someone who has had contact with a known COVID19 case.
It's helpful to watch for symptoms, so Paying attention to shortness of breath, a fever or just stomach upset may be an issue. Some people having trouble breathing may need a respirator.
A person's heart could be affected by the virus also. John Hopkins is reporting that the global deaths so far are 5% of those affected with COVID19. People over age of 60 and those with serious health concerns, untreated HIV, asthma, diabetes, and COPD etc are at greater risk. LGBTQ people are being disproportinately affected economically and medically.
While self-isolating physically, it is important to stay in social contact as much as possible. Trans--and gender affirming medical care is important yet surgeries have been halted at this time. Medications are good to have on hand with a 3-month supply.
Health care centers are providing abortions and healthcare needs. Any state curtailing those services are not needed but rather is politically motivated, according to the medical speaker. Tips to practice good hygience, frequent thorough handwashing and cleaning services.
From the Q and A: Many LGBTQ cannot afford a doctor and often have higher incidences of health concerns. One in 5 LGBTQ are unemployed. Many minors identifying as such are homeless. Smoking can exacerbate symptoms of respiratory illness, and the LGBTQ population does have a higher incidence of smoking. Facts and data at hrc.org can help politicians make responsive laws and provisions to prevent harm and provide support for various populations.
Legislation in Idaho (and in many states) passed discrimination of transgender girls to participate in a sport of their choice. A focus on bigotry and discrimination is taking root in many states, not representing the values of their constituents. Politicians are sometimes creating a problem that doesn't exist. There's lots more to learn. Pushing back laws that demonize transgender and LGBTQ people. and treat them as second -class citizens.
Yet another program coming up tonight, independent from the others mentioned here (none of which are related...just listed in calendar fashion.)
Tonight at 10pm there will be a live talk by @AskTammyAdams on Instagram. She is medium with insights about many aspects of a person's life and these times.
Tomorrow there will be talk on HumanitysTeam.org (and they are offering many programs at reduced rates.)
