Driving in the Rain, Sleet or Snow is Optional and Worth NOT Doing if Heavy Duty
I happened to read that cars can hydroplane at 35 mph so worth trying to plan to not drive in the rain if possible..take breaks or delay events if a big storm for everyone's safety is possible.
A large group of us got poured on at the end of a meeting which was raising funds (and having a nice potluck)..but likely we should have cancelled due to the heavy rains predicted and the road which tends to get a stream running over it.
I saw in my Toastmasters magazine that more clubs can meet online...and there's and option to have half the meetings online and half in person. Maybe more faith groups and other 'optional groups' could plan to have online meetings or phone calls (usually you can join by phone if a webinar etc.)
If people had some practice meetings (PTOs, Garden Club, Woman's Club, Scouts and maybe even updates for Government, with votes taken at the next meeting ,maybe everyone could feel they could still get 'work and fun' done without risking tricky weather... Just thinking out loud here. Sometimes cutting back a little can give more people ways to get things done (not having to drive, cook, prepare with wonderful outfits and outdoor wear.) Okay, this will go on my blog so more can consider the idea... and again try it out For Fun..as well as make sure everyone has a few buddies who know the basics of their life, have a house key or other important info In Case someone needs to be in touch, or wants to do a wellness check, etc.
Small towns and even city neighborhoods and block could promote more common sense to help people keep track of one another in basic ways for daily living as well as bigger needs if one is away or having an illness or other major transition. In one large co-op in NY for instance, four people who owned apartments did not have contact info with the management company (Which is an idea I spelled out at one meeting just in terms of being neighborly or being able to check on someone who was behind in paying a monthly maintenance fee etc.
Now the board of residents is suggesting that in a newsletter...and will welcome a few contact names to store...and it's over 1000 apartments..If They can do it, We can do it. Why not encourage everyone to have some go-to people in terms of a trusted family member or friend or If Possible, a town social worker...just to know who someone could call and maybe see if some people would like some follow-up checks through another network. England and other places offer calls to all who would like that (mostly the elderly or others who live alone...)
Okay that's enough for right now...but to end on a nice note, www.wowforum.org was a big success with great speakers, including Sarah Calhoun originally from Cornwall CT. Her Red Ants Pants Co. and the Music Festival her company got started out in Montana has been a big success... google and consider making a road trip (in good weather) for their July Event. Last year they got 18,000 to their field of dreams with top notch music and lots of good company filling the field.
