Tips and Gifts to Spring Into May With Presents (and Presence!)

After a full day with Suzanne O'Brien of DoulaGivers.org I encourage everyone to zoom over to her site to check out her online FREE Level One Training to be aware of End-Of-Life Issues and Support.

You will find a pleasant sounding earth angel, well-trained and experienced nurse who worked for over a decade in practices of oncology (cancer arena) and hospice (visiting people in their homes and in more formal hospice settings.) She's been interviewed by many news programs with more calling all the time from around the US and the world.

She had some humbling and enlightening training in Zimbabwe of all places (yes, that country in Africa) where people did not have the medical resources or even the modern housing, plumbing and trained people to care for others, but they had one another. Family and friends, young and old would sit bedside or provide basic care for the ill and those who were dying.

The basics of care, compassionsionate companionship and sharing knowledge is a shared human experienced. Under the term "doula" (meaning a non-medical support person for care and social help), more people can perform that role as they learn of it. Currently the field is not regulated and draws many from various helping professions, including hospice trained volunteers or paid aides, home health and CNAs (certified nursing assistants who can work in nursing homes or in private homes and are often covered by insurance, yet each state and family would need to check on that.)

Doulas may be covered by some plans but often make an hourly rate along the lines of home health aides or more. Private arrangements can be made by families and End-of-Life Doulas. There is an international association as well so more people around the world are working together. For the record, I am not officially endorsing anyone or getting any compensation for doing so at this time. Just passing along a couple of tips.
